“It was only a smile, nothing more. It didn’t make everything all right. It didn’t make ANYTHING all right. Only a smile. A tiny thing. A leaf in the woods, shaking in the wake of a startled bird’s flight. But I’ll take it. With open arms. Because when spring comes, it melts the snow one flake at a time, and maybe I just witnessed the first flake melting. – Amir”
The Kite Runner is one such book that portrayed human emotions in an excellent way. Khaled Hosseini weaves a storyline exceptionally well. The way he links one aspect to the next is mesmerizing. Perfect description of human emotions is probably his sheer brilliance that makes the reader actually feel them.
This book connected me at so many moments that are simply innumerable. Never read before a book that connects to me so emotionally. The poignancy touched me and I guess, every other reader as well. A simple and precise language is his power in his portrayal of the characters.
The story is about two boys – Amir and Hassan [The Kite Runner] who grew up together. The initial pot says Hassan was Amir’s servant’s son only to reveal his actual relationship with Amir much later towards the end. Hassan, though an illiterate, had a golden heart and knew human emotions well and perfectly showed when circumstances demanded. Never did he complain of anything, in spite of poverty. He considered Amir as his best friend and stood by him always. However, the same was not reciprocated by Amir. He was different. Though he mentions he loved Hassan a lot, he never treated him as his equals, as he was their servant’s son.
The story progresses only to reveal latent facets of life to Amir and how Amir returns to his roots to mend his ways.
Below are few lines that have caught my attention and imprinted in my mind.
“I wished I could be alone in my room, with my books, away from these people.”
“Better to get hurt by the truth than comforted with a lie.”
“For you, a thousand times over.” [Short yet deep]
“It may be unfair, but what happens in a few days, sometimes even a single day, can change the course of a whole lifetime…”
“There is only one sin. and that is theft… when you tell a lie, you steal someones right to the truth.”
“People say that eyes are windows to the soul.”
Yet to read Khaled’s other awesome books. Awaiting ! ❤
